What are trapped emotions?
Trapped emotions are the energetic residue of emotionally intense experiences that the body never fully processed at the time. Instead of moving through and clearing out, the energy of a difficult moment — grief, rejection, shock, shame — can become lodged in the body, where the subconscious holds it as a small, concentrated ball of unresolved emotional energy. According to The Emotion Code method developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson, nearly everyone carries at least a few. Left unaddressed, they can keep you feeling stuck, heavy, or reactive long after the original event has passed.
How does an emotion become trapped in the first place?
Most of the time, emotional energy does what it’s meant to do: you feel it, it moves through, and it clears — a flash of anger that passes, tears that come and go, nerves before a presentation that settle afterwards. Problems start when an experience is too intense, too sudden, or arrives when you’re too exhausted, too young, or too overwhelmed to process it fully. In those moments the body prioritises getting through the day and quietly defers the emotional work. The energy of that deferred moment — a shock, a humiliation, a loss, years of pressure at work — can then lodge in the body instead of clearing out. It isn’t a character flaw. It’s the body doing its best with what it was given.
Why does the body hang onto them?
Because the subconscious is, above all, protective. It would rather store an unfinished emotional experience than let you fall apart in the middle of a crisis — so it holds the energy aside, waiting for a “later” that often never comes. Think of it as a browser tab left open: harmless enough at first, but dozens of them slow everything down. Around the heart specifically, the subconscious can go further and layer trapped emotions into a protective barrier — a Heart Wall. According to The Emotion Code, an estimated 93% of people have one, built from the hardest moments of their lives. We cover that in full in What Is a Heart Wall?
How does a session locate trapped emotions?
Through surrogate muscle testing — the same proxy yes/no method used in every session at Optimized Being. Instead of asking you to relive or retell painful memories, the practitioner asks the subconscious directly which trapped emotions are present and, just as importantly, which ones are ready to be released now. The answers come one at a time, in the order your body indicates it can handle them. You don’t need to know where an emotion came from, name it in advance, or re-experience anything. The full mechanics — including how a session can work with no video call at all — are explained in our guide to remote energy healing and proxy sessions.
What does releasing a trapped emotion feel like?
Gentle, and for most people surprisingly relaxing. Once an emotion is identified, it’s released with intention — nothing is forced, and the body only lets go of what it’s ready to release. Some clients describe a wave of lightness, a deep exhale, warmth in the chest, or simply an unusual quiet. Others feel nothing obvious during the 30-minute session but notice clear shifts in the days that follow: sleeping better, snapping less, feeling lighter without being able to say exactly why.
What happens in the 48 hours after a release?
Releasing doesn’t stop when the session ends. Integration can continue for up to 48 hours, which is why we keep sessions to a focused 30 minutes rather than stacking more into one sitting. Over the following days many people notice changes in mood, sleep, or emotional reactions — signs that the release is still settling. Every session includes detailed follow-up notes so you can see exactly what was located and released, and every session is backed by a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Are trapped emotions a medical or psychiatric diagnosis?
No. “Trapped emotions” is an energetic concept from The Emotion Code, not a medical term. Sessions are a complementary support modality and never a substitute for care from a doctor or mental-health professional.
How many trapped emotions does the average person have?
Nearly everyone carries some — that’s the premise of The Emotion Code itself. How many, and how much they’re affecting you, varies enormously. A session identifies only what your body indicates is ready to release now; deeper layers can follow later if you choose.
Can trapped emotions affect physical wellbeing?
Clients often report that emotional releases coincide with physical or functional shifts too. On our case studies page you’ll find an anonymized client whose allergy impact dropped from 9/10 to 3/10 in a single session. We never promise outcomes — we measure impact and publish what actually happened.
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. Surrogate testing does the locating, and you share only what you want to share. Many clients book proxy sessions where there’s no live conversation at all.
